Cebu: Magellan's Cross

When the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu in 1521, he purportedly planted this cross as a symbol of the conquest of the islands under the Spanish crown. Although Portuguese (and Portugal was at that time Spain's competitor in the divide and conquer contest), Magellan's promise to find a westward route to travel to the East so enthralled the Escoreal that the latter willingly financed his voyage.
